ISGF
Founding Principles

The associations and bodies that form ISGF recognise a number of elements that together become foundations of governance and that can be applied across different governance, ownership and cultural contexts rather than prescribing specific governance structures or practices.

ISGF FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

1. Students come first

Decisions are made in the best interests of current and future students.

2. Governance is strategic
Governance focuses on vision, sustainability and long-term direction rather than day-to-day management.

3. Roles are clear
Governance and management responsibilities are understood, respected and appropriately separated.

4. Safeguarding is paramount
Governance ensures that safeguarding, wellbeing and student welfare remain central to oversight and decision-making.

5. Governance provides support and challenge
Governance combines support of leaders with robust accountability and constructive challenge.

6. Integrity underpins governance
Those involved in school governance act with honesty, objectivity, professionalism and in the interests of the school as a whole. Governance also models the school’s mission, and values and the behaviours that it seeks to cultivate in its students.

7. Diversity of experience strengthens decision-making
Governance benefits from a broad range of perspectives, experiences and expertise.

8. Governance is informed and evidence-based
Governance uses reliable information, meaningful reporting and stakeholder insight and appropriate evidence to guide decisions.

9. Strong relationships matter
Trust, transparency and respectful communication between those involved in governance, school leaders and stakeholders are essential. Governance seeks meaningful opportunities for stakeholder voice and contribution to strategic thinking.

10. Governance is reflective and continually improving
Governance seeks to strengthen its effectiveness over time, including through reviewing performance and investing in training.
